The Secret to Changing How Other Kids Treat

Your Child with a Disability?

What You Wish You'd Known All Along!

Parents of kids with disabilities wish for a life of inclusion and belonging for their child.

But most struggle to find it. It's not your fault.

How society treats kids with disabilities is a product of our history and culture.

So, what's the secret to making a difference?

That's A Great Question!

Hey There, I'm Diana,

Creator of the Beyond Awareness Movement.

And I found myself asking that same question.

I did all the things I was taught as a sibling and a special education teacher: talking about people with disabilities as if I were the expert, simulation activities, inspirational stories, etc. And I discovered that these lessons, and the way that I was talking about disability, were NOT  making a positive difference.

Through years of research, I finally figured out that our traditional understandings of disability were outdated, based in ableism, and counterproductive!

I started learning about disability from a social justice lens, and here's what happened...

  • Children with disabilities began to feel "seen" and valued as members of the community
  • I started to feel at ease about and empowered with disability conversations
  • My non-disabled students felt comfortable with and respectful of people with disabilities
  • Children without disabilities at my school began to want to include students with disabilities
  • My teacher colleagues began to advocate for inclusion
  • Parents of non-disabled students thanked me for helping their children to be respectful citizens
  • Parents of non-disabled children reported that their kids were educating them about disability at home!

To sum it up, perspectives shifted completely among both students AND staff on campus!

And students with disabilities were empowered!

3 women and 2 children pose for a photo. Two women stand bent over. One woman is in wheelchair. And one child is in a wheelchair. They are all smiling in a school auditorium.

"What you have done here at McMillin for the past 18 years has made a tremendous difference in our students and in our school culture. I know this not only because of the students who walk the halls each day with a kindness and inclusive spirit that is unique to our campus, but also because my own son who attended school here from kindergarten through 6th grade, and who is now an EMT, is completely comfortable, compassionate, and capable when serving his patients with disabilities.
